This is the craft I did for our MOPs group this week – Cookies in a jar.  The most expensive craft we’ve done so far, but still in the $3 range.  The jars run you about $1 each and materials make up the extra.  Be sure to get the Kerr jars because they have smoother sides (the Ball canning jars have all sorts of bumpy detailing all over them!)  Here’s your recipe:

Chocolate Chip Cookies in a Jar
    (makes 7 jars)
    9 cups flour
    4 tsp baking soda
    3 c brown sugar
    3 c white sugar
    4 c shortening
    8 c semi-sweet chocolate chips

Get a SUPER large bowl for mixing.  Put all the dry ingredients in. Cut in shortening until fine crumbs form.  Add chocolate chips.  Measure four cups into each jar, tapping down as necessary until it all fits.  Cut 7″ circles of fabric and place on top of lid, attaching with a thin rubber band.  Tie with twine (or decorative ribbon)  Print the instructions below on a sticker (or copy them onto a card) and attach to the jar:

    Chocolate Chip Cookies
    Preheat oven to 375 degrees
In medium bowl, beat 2 eggs and 1tsp of vanilla.  Add entire contents of jar to bowl and mix well.  Drop by spoonfuls onto cookie sheet and bake 10 minutes.  Makes 2 dozen.

And so I actually baked a batch before testing them out on the whole MOPs group.  They are actually really good cookies!  (despite the shortening)  A great Christmas gift idea for friends or neighbors.  Also handy to have a few jars in your pantry, just in case you need to whip up a quick dessert to take somewhere.
